Frequently Asked Questions

The woodshop is designed to replicate a high end hobbyists shop with all the bells and whistles that would never work in your garage. 

Membership

When do I pay membership dues? 
All new memberships are month to month at this time. After you've been a member for a few months you can elect to pay for longer periods with a discount.
What can I make at the shop?
You can take a guided class with one of our instructors which you'll come away with a nice project or if you're a member you can make whatever you want.
When is the shop open?
For members the shop is open all the time. 
Are the classes included with membership?
All members must take a safety and operations class in the first month of their membership regardless of experience. All other classes are at will but members do get discounts.
Do I have to be a member to take a class? 
Woodworking machines are used everyday by carpenters, artisans and hobbyists. They take time to learn but everyone can operate them in a safe and efficient manner with training. 
How do I get in to the building?
Each member will be given a security key to get into the shop. All students will be given instructions before class starts.
Can anyone join? 
Anyone over 25 that is interested in woodworking can join.
Can I store my projects at the shop?
When a project is in process, it can be left at the shop - once finished it should be taken away. All projects usually take two to four weeks. 
Can I keep my lumber at the shop? 
Yes, but you must account for it every two weeks. We also will donate left over wood to the rest of the community. 

Classes

Do I bring my own wood?
All beginner classes come with the wood needed for the project, the intermediate classes students will supply their own wood.
How many people are in class?
Usually 6 to 8. Advanced courses may have less students. 
How long are the classes?
All classes approximate time is listed.  
Who are the teachers?
Members, high school shop teachers, carpenters, professors, craftsman -people that love woodworking and want to teach you how to build.  
When should I show up? 
Try to be at the shop 15 minutes before the start of class to get familiar with the space, sign waivers, and chat with whoever is around. 
Are classes multiday? 
Some - the beginner classes are only for one day, the intermediate classes take a few sessions at the shop to complete. 

Tool Usage

How are the machines maintained?
By your efficient use and the shops resources. Without appropriate use a machine can fall into repair. Uptime is a reality of what we face at the shop but good use and preventive maintenance.
What tools are at the shop?
Can I bring the tools home?
No. Why would you even think that silly? 
Can I bring my own tools?
Yes, but you can't leave them here. Buying your own set of precision measurement tools, sanding paper and safety gear is a common practice among members other tools, not so much. 
If a tool breaks what should I do? 
Report it to a teacher or to tools@handsonwood.com

Health & Safety

How can I stay safe? 
Following the rules, knowing what tool you're using and thinking through each cut before you make it. Knowing how the cut should go and taking precaution will help you stay in tact. 
How do I qualify for tool usage?
As a member, you need to take two Safety & Operations classes the first month you join. This will qualify you. 
Should I bring my own PPE?
If you do, make sure that it's commercially available and of high quality.
Should I wear gloves? 
No. Gloves do not help you woodworking they actually harm you. Gloves are very likely to catch on a moving blade than your finger.
